FAQs
Therapy aims to help people improve their lives. It focuses on addressing mental health conditions for which treatment is necessary. Therapy helps individuals understand past experiences and mental health issues like anxiety or depression. Therapists are trained to work with people having significant difficulties getting things done or getting along with others in important parts of their lives, such as work, home, or education, and help them improve.
In short, therapy helps people address medical conditions that significantly affect their lives so they can function better.
Your first few sessions with me will involve an evaluation of your needs and preferences. By the end of the evaluation, I’ll be able to offer you some first impressions of whether I can help, what our work together will include, and a treatment plan to follow if you decide to continue with therapy. More specifically, I will provide you with a diagnosis, if any. I will provide you with the methods and techniques I will use, what you will do, and the expected duration of therapy.
It is important to note that this plan is flexible and can be adjusted based on your progress and changing needs. You should evaluate this information and your opinions about whether you feel comfortable working with me and whether I can help. At the end of the evaluation, I will tell you if I believe I am not the right therapist to help you. If so, I will refer you to another provider (or providers) as necessary who might be better suited to help you.
Therapy involves a significant commitment of time, money, and energy, so you should be very careful about the therapist you select. If you decide to work with me and I can help, therapy typically involves regular sessions, such as weekly or biweekly, to discuss your challenges and progress. I’ll ask questions, provide skills training, and help you create action plans between visits to achieve your goals. You’ll also be able to ask questions and give feedback on our work together.
The number of sessions is different for everyone. I’ll work with you to determine your individual medical needs and what it will take to achieve your goals. Usually, though, therapy can last around 16 sessions after your initial evaluation. During our work together, we’ll measure your progress along the way. Within a few months, most people experience significant improvement in their lives and continuous improvement after that.
We’ll measure and track your progress in treatment using different questionnaires before, during, and at the end of treatment. I’ll also ask you questions during visits, observe how you’re doing, and get your feedback. We call this Measurement-Based Care (MBC), which helps to inform treatment. Research shows that MBC improves outcomes by ensuring therapists deliver personalized, data-driven care. MBC empowers the therapist and patient to use data collected to set and track progress related to the patient’s needs. But what’s with all the questions? Your answers help me get to know you so I can evaluate your mental health. Why? So I can deliver effective care that’s tailored to your individual needs.
I am a network provider on Rula, Grow Therapy, and Headway online therapy platforms that connect therapists with patients with insurance. You may use your health insurance when you book an appointment with me on your chosen platform and pay any required health insurance copayments.
If you book an appointment with me without or instead of using your health insurance plan, or if Rula, Grow Therapy, or Headway does not accept your insurance, you can use a credit card to pay for services with me. I take almost any kind of credit or debit card. I do not accept health insurance. However, I might be able to work with you on billing your employer or employer’s insurance carrier for work-related injuries. I can also provide a superbill for out-of-network individuals, which might help with reimbursement.
Here are the credit or debit cards accepted:
Visa
MasterCard
American Express
JCB
Discover
Diners Club
FSA and HSA cards
Payment is due at the beginning of an appointment. Here is my fee schedule for the following appointment types:
Diagnostic evaluation: $225 (first session)
1 appointment hour: $150
My rate for other psychological-related services is $150 per hour.
Choice. If you wish to stay in your health insurance network, you might not find a provider with the specialized training and experience necessary to help you address the unique issues you want to address. Paying out of pocket means you have the freedom to choose a provider that will work for you.
Flexibility. Health insurance companies can put limits on the number and length of therapy sessions, as well as restrict the types of services you receive, such as career coaching. Paying out of pocket allows you access to all my services to meet your needs without worrying about whether you’re covered.
Privacy. When you use your health insurance for therapy, the treating provider must give your insurance company at least a diagnosis so you can receive insurance benefits. The diagnosis becomes part of your permanent medical record, which can affect things like life insurance and work opportunities. Paying out of pocket means you and I are not required to share any medical information with your health insurance company. And that means you can maintain your privacy and decide who you want to share your information with.
If your health insurance company covers services provided by an out-of-network provider, you might be able to submit a bill. If you are unsure of your benefits, contact your insurance company and ask about services by an out-of-network or single-exception provider. Also, ask what information the company will need for you to qualify for reimbursement. I can provide you with a receipt with information that most insurance companies request from an out-of-network provider.

Whether you are a new or existing patient, here are a few other things to know before booking your online appointment with me. The use of various types of electronic communications is common in society. Many people believe that this is the preferred method of communication with others, whether their relationships are social or professional. However, many electronic modes of communication put your privacy at risk. I take security very seriously. I use electronic communication only with your permission and for administrative purposes like confirming appointments, sending appointment reminders, and driving you to my secure client portal.
By clicking on the “I’m a New Client” or “I’m an Existing Client” button to book an appointment, you agree to receive my electronic communications for administrative purposes. This easy, fast, automated electronic process does not encrypt messages from me. To protect your privacy, I do not include health information and limit personal information disclosed in my messages to the email address you provide. Please check your email address for accuracy before scheduling the appointment. Any information I receive from you is stored, encrypted, and secured.
If you have any questions about booking an appointment, please call my secure and confidential voice line at (401) 594-9010. If you prefer to call and book an appointment, that’s okay too.
Telepsychology is a way to connect with a healthcare provider using technology over the Internet, like video conferencing. This allows people to meet and get therapy services without going to an office. It can make it easier for people to access the services they want from a more convenient place.
I use a HIPAA-compliant platform by SimplePractice to deliver therapy services using video conferencing technology. Your appointments and information are secure with bank-level encryption. Features include easy appointment scheduling, automatic appointment reminders, mobile or desktop device use, no logins or passwords necessary, and clicking a link to start an appointment.
Telepsychology is not for everyone, but it might be for you. I’ll work with you to determine whether video conferencing is an option, exploring the benefits and risks of using this method to meet your needs and preferences. We’ll also regularly monitor and assess your progress using telepsychology to determine whether it’s still a practical option for you.
